Encouraging Audience Growth

In order to encourage audience growth, a promotional button will be made available for people to include on their own websites or in their e-mails. This will both indicate the work of digital art being recommended and allow a click to place a bid (or introduce the clicker to the concept of the digital art auction).

Moreover, it will be possible for the new clicker to copy the button to obtain commission themselves, which will also benefit the person they copied it from.

A commission will be given to the host of the click button based on final sale price and:

B1: the number of succeeding bid referrals made by button clicks

Bn: the number of succeeding bid referrals made by button clicks on all derived buttons

The commission rate for a button is C1 (direct commission), and for derived buttons is Cn (indirect commission).

Given a final retail price of P, the total commission a button receives is: P*(B1*C1+Bn*Cn).

For example with P=$5, C1=1% and Cn=0.1%, and B1=50, and Bn=400. The button obtains a total commission of $4.5.

If buttons become the primary means by which bids are obtained, on average this commission will cost the artist around C1+Cn (1.1% in the above example) of the final sale price (in addition to the commission, 1% say, charged by the auctioneer).

Eventually, it may be possible for artists to specify the direct and indirect commission rates, but it is probably best initially if they are fixed.

A fresh button can be requested from the auction site, or the artist's site, just as easily as it can be obtained from copying a button.

The artist will always be able to determine the amount of commission that would accrue for any given retail price.

The button host will be able to find out B1 and Bn.

The button host could have the option to embellish the button image in order to increase the likelihood that it and its descendents are copied.

Selection Matching

Records can be kept of which users bid for what art, and this can be used to make suggestions to other bidders.
